Even while Osamu Tezuka wasn't the first to try his hand at drawing comics, there were others before him such as Hokusai [coined the term manga - literally meaning whimsical pictures. Hokusai used this term to refer to a type of drawing which was not visualized prior to being drawn. His method involved drawing according to the movement of the brush across the canvas etc.] and Ippei Okamoto, [one of the first who did comic strips as inspired by the Western style - specifically the strips which featured regularly in Joseph Pulitzer's magazine] it is widely acknowledged by historians and fans alike that Tezuka was the main pioneer.
