"Fate?"
By Ellie Hair

Val placed the bow about his neck and collected his quiver, frowning when he saw that three golden arrows remained inside. He had very little time left to fulfil that days' quota, he'd better get a move on. A sound behind made him turn, to see Sylph fluttering towards him. Val watched her glide effortlessly, and eyed his own small wings with disdain, before giving the angel a welcoming smile. "Hi Sylph, I can't stop long I'm afraid, I still have three arrows left, and not much time." Sylph smiled sweetly "Oh, that's alright, I was wondering if I could tag along ?" Val smiled, Sylph was very popular, highly accomplished, it certainly would do wonders for his own reputation to have her along while he worked. "Sure, that'll be fine." They launched themselves from the cloud, and headed off to try and find, as quickly as possible, use for the three arrows. They hadn't gone far when Sylph spotted two people arguing. She tapped Val on the arm, and pointed them out to him, he nodded, and took aim.

Gabe was minding his business, when this woman had run full pelt into him. Obviously not looking where she was going, she had floored him, sending his large pile of books in all directions. And then he had looked up to see what had hit him, and had been floored again, she was fantastic. She was busy trying collect up his books, telling him that he really should keep an eye on where he was going, and that was when they started arguing, after all, it hadn't been all his fault. He hadn't meant to shout back at her, he wanted to know who she was, where she lived, but instead he found himself on the defensive, and unable to get a word in edgeways to stand up for himself. Then she stopped mid sentence, glanced at her watch and gasped in horror "oh Lord !" Without another word to Gabe, she jumped to her feet and ran off, leaving him stunned.

"So now what ?" Sylph asked. "Well," Val said, taking out the second arrow "I have to catch up with her and get her too."

Laura arrived at the lecture ten minutes late, and received a severe ticking off from the Professor. However it was followed later by another, when it was obvious she hadn't been paying attention, and gazed perplexed at the Professor when he asked her a question. She couldn't stop thinking about that guy, the one she had bumped into, she had been in the wrong, but she had been so embarrassed, she had gone on the attack and still couldn't understand why she had been so mean to him. He probably hoped never to see her again. She collected her bag and left the class with the other students, turning the corner to smack into a chest for the second time that day. Gabe hit the young woman, but this time, his arms around her waist prevented her from falling. She quickly collected herself, and pushed him away. Being in those arms felt too nice, too safe, too ... right. "Good grief, is this a habit of yours ?" she blustered, and hurried away before he had a chance to reply. Gabe shook his head and went on to his class. He had felt himself drowning in her large blue eyes, he'd always been a practical down to earth guy, today he just didn't feel like himself at all.

"Now, Val now quick. She's getting away !" Val took aim but the arrow narrowly missed its target. "Sylph you nudged me !" "I did not !! What do we do now, think !" Val shook his head, and reached for the last arrow, now he knew why he always worked alone.

Laura sat down to lunch a little over an hour later, and couldn't eat a thing. His face kept coming to mind, he was so cute, twice she had bumped into him, literally, and both times she'd been really mean. He must be new, she would have noticed otherwise, but it was too late now, she had well and truly mucked it up. Her friends wondered continually what was disturbing her, and she spent the day being absent minded in her classes, unable to get him off her mind. Gabe didn't fare much better. This was his first day at the college, and though he had easily made friends, and had attracted the attention of most of the female students, the only one he had taken an interest in seemed to hate him. Later, as the final bell went and the students gleefully swarmed out to go home, Gabe said bye to his new friends until tomorrow, and climbed into his car. He was watching the road carefully when a dog ran out in front of him, causing him to come to a screeching stop. He missed the dog, but the car behind failed to miss him, and there was the sound of breaking glass and scraping metal as the cars connected. Laura was out of the car in a second, ready to screech at the driver who had stopped so suddenly before her. Gabe climbed out, and when he saw who it was, he couldn't stop himself from laughing.

Val released the arrow, and Sylph clapped gleefully as it struck its target.

"I don't think we've been properly introduced." Gabe said, pulling Laura into his arms, this time intent on not letting her get away. Laura closed her eyes, as their mouths met, feeling gloriously happy, and where she belonged.

Val released a long breath, and placed the bow about his neck, as he and Sylph turned to fly home. "Is it like this for you everday ?" she asked. "No, not always." Val replied "especially on February 14th, then everyone seems to be in love !" Sylph laughed. "Well it seems like really hard work, and rest assured that after coming with you today, I think its about time the Boss gave you a bigger set of wings !!"
